Award Predictions

If I Were Giving Out the 2014 Newbery Medal

I would probably give it to Hokey Pokey by Jerry Spinelli.

And I would definitely give Newbery Honors to Doll Bones by Holly Black and The Lost Kingdom by Matthew J. Kirby, and maybe give one to The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp by Kathy Appelt as well.

But I didn’t read nearly enough last year to do any any truly knowledgeable award giving.  I’m sure there are many other worthy titles that I just didn’t get around to reading.   Still, all these books I’ve listed are worth your time.

If I Were Giving Out the 2014 Caldecott Medal

I would probably give it to Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown.

And I would probably give Caldecott Honors to Building Our House by Jonathan Bean, Journey by Aaron Becker, and Locomotive by Brian Floca.

Not that there weren’t tons of other awesome picture books released last year.  I should probably make a real list of all my favorites, not just the ones I think are Caldecott-friendly.
