In honor of her recent Newbery Medal win for Flora & Ulysses, I decided to re-inaugurate my Newbery+Authors+Classics Challenge by working my way through a selected bibliography of Kate DiCamillo. I’ve read many of her books before, but I want to read them all again with an eye specifically toward writing craft. Basically, I want to see if I can figure out some of her trade secrets. Although I don’t want to write exactly like her and probably couldn’t ever even if I did want to, I nonetheless really admire her writing style and I have a lot to learn from her (as well as many other writers.) Hence the reading challenges.
For DiCamillo I started with her first novel (Because of Winn Dixie) and I’ll be working my way forward in time. I will probably skip most of her easy chapter books, but who knows?
