This happened to my wife one time in the basement of Sterling Furniture .

It’s probably really her story to tell as I wasn’t there, but she doesn’t like to talk about it now so I am going appropriate her experience for this review. It began out of a desperate, sleepless search to find an identical replacement for a specific make and model of an old maternity recliner that had fallen apart. By my memory from the scattered, panicked descriptions she gave in her phone call to me just after having made it back out, here experience involved flickering basement lights, furniture displayed haphazardly in a repurposed bank vault, an ancient, incontinent Pomeranian stalking her from room to room, and, finally, a handwritten special order form with down payment supposedly secured via one of those sliding manual credit card carbon copy imprinter machines, all taken by a clerk who may have been a ghost, or a memory of a clerk. Somehow she made it out, but she never heard word of the recliner she supposedly ordered.

I myself clipped into this place numerous times from the basements of LDS (f.k.a. Mormon) temples doing baptisms for the dead in the 90s. The ultimate liminal spaces, I just didn’t recognize it at the time. I think probably the basements of all LDS temples throughout the world likely connect to the backrooms, and therefore to each other if you can follow the obscure path.

I really vibed with the ambiguity of a lot of this: an unnerving meditation on the emptiness of both the physical and online spaces that supposedly connect all of us, both familiar to us and at the same time endless, uncanny, and ultimately unknowable. There is always another doorway, another room, another video, another post, another artifact, another curated pile of products, another memory, another mystery, another iteration, another objectification. When some of the more stock body horror and gore elements suddenly popped in late in the movie I was taken out of this a bit. It almost felt to me like they were obligatory additions so as to check off enough boxes to make this a certifiable regulation horror movie. But maybe they were necessary and actually do contribute a lot of meaning-making to the film? I don’t want to spoil any more than I already have, though, as I don’t to mark this review as a spoiler.

No matter, the ending was suitably ambiguous and I do look forward to the already-confirmed sequel without many expectations.

I also loved seeing the making-of bonus bits on the blu-ray, as I had so much curiosity while watching about the extent to which the sets were physically constructed versus computer generated. I was not disappointed by the answers and tricks shown.

In March of this year (2026) I created a new account on Letterboxd, and since then it has been the main place (or really the only place) on the Internet that I’ve personally shared any ‘content’ (as I have published several reviews and lists there), or to any extent actively engaged with other humans via social media (by way of liking others’ reviews and lists and following a bunch of people there.) I don’t have any connection to the people I follow on Letterboxd outside of Letterboxd, and I’m not aware of any people in my physical life (family, friends, co-workers) who have accounts on Letterboxd, except one former co-worker and maybe friend who moved away and I haven’t seen or talked to her in years. Maybe this is why I have felt some freedom to post there.

Other than Letterboxd, my social media activity of late has consisted entirely of subscribing to and reading blog RSS feeds (mainly people and blogs I’ve found around the indieweb and micro.blog communities) and email newsletters (mainly from susbstack and some scattered subscriptions via a now-defunct meta-newsletter discovery service that would send me a new random suggested newsletter issue every day.) I am a true lurker; I have no interaction with the authors of these feeds and newsletters. The newsletter people do have my email, and on most platforms used they likely get analytics about whether I open or look or click, but in the case of the RSS feeds, I think there is likely no transparency or indication to the authors that I even exist and follow or read their posts. So I feel like kind of a parasocial creep for that, despite engaging in the indieweb value of open feeds and protocols. I should probably make myself known somehow to these people. but I’m not ready yet. I always feel like I should get this website in better order before I draw any attention to it or to myself. Also, I think I have disabused myself of an earlier fantasy or illusion that, if/when I do start revealing myself to these people and commenting on their blogs or emailing them, or set up webmentions, or do whatever it is that makes one truly part of the “indieweb” community, that they will want to hear from me and follow what I do, and I will have some sort of instant community and flourishing friendships from what is right now very much parasocial.

But I’ve been a bit active on Letterboxd, and I’m consistently watching movies. I’ve logged 66 films watched this year on letterboxd, and I’ve watched maybe 6 more in the past week or two that I haven’t even logged yet. I don’t know that I’m getting any better at thinking about movies or writing about movies, but I am at least getting better at ingesting them and experiencing them?

I think I’m going to port my Letterboxd reviews and diary/watch logs of the last few months onto this website, and going forward I want to try to post things here first so that I feel like I own them and they have a permanent and open home, and are in the shared context of the others things I do here or might share here. I also will probably make a post for each of my 3-Film Mini Challenges, and for other challenges or lists I am engaging in or might engage in on Letterboxd in the future. It’s maybe overkill duplication but I just want to do it both places. This will be the first phase of the retroactive web logging process I mentioned in my prior post, Guess I should write and blog and stuff.

Guess I should write and blog and stuff?

the phone horoscope app vibes don’t lie
it knows almost everything about me
but I’m not sure if that’s because
it is mapping the movements of the stars and planets
to my time and location of birth
or mapping the movements of my eyes
and the taps of my fingers on this phone
but either way it is occasionally helpful
or at least affirming and sycophantic

Sep 16 Your Daily Vibe: Wednesday
The inner life you tend so carefully might be most fully expressed when it’s given outward form through practices and creative outlets that allow others to genuinely encounter what lives within you.

What lives within me, though?
A blog in verse, I guess?
In the worst possible pretending-I’m-a-14-year-old-again way?

That was always the point, though
of this site design
recreating the blue
Wordperfect screen
on the old 286 in the basement
where I would type poems
and sometimes print them out dot matrix
and call up the library catalog via the modem
and then type-navigate through the text menu
to telnet to other library catalogs in other cities
and I found something I think was called the Denver Free Net
where there were message boards for music and different topics
and the main thing I remember was that I argued with some old guy
saying that Pearl Jam was better than Santana
because in 1994 I was obsessed with Pearl Jam
and all I knew of Santana
was “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va”
that I associated with the less good classic rock station
that played the more ‘AM Gold’ adjacent 70s and 80s rock songs
not the harder, weirder stuff like Hendrix and Zeppelin
not even the Beatles and the Stones
no psych freak outs no prog rock no 8 minute tracks
and I thought those songs were corny and meaningless
and not so angsty and “real” like Pearl Jam
and of course I didn’t recognize
that Santana also could be harder and weirder
and that even “Black Magic Woman”
has a wild extended minute-plus afro-latin-jazz-psych-blues intro
and several guitar solos and psychy-proggy freak out sections
between the corny singing and songwriting
and I didn’t understand the nuances of the latin percussion
or the innovation of fusing it with rock and all these other genres
or have any ear for what Santana was doing back then
and I was basically an ignorant, anonymous 14-year-old
and the actually good classic rock station
that did play all the weird and hard stuff
and probably did play Santana
was shut down around that time
and when they started broadcasting again
they were a country station called K-BULL
and then a few years later Santana had a hit with the Matchbox 20 guy
who I guess I thought was earnest and angsty and real at first
but not when he was singing smooth with Santana
and I’d long forgotten about the Denver Free Net.
The alternative station from the 90s
that played Pearl Jam and later Matchbox 20
but probably didn’t play the Santana song with Rob Thomas
is still on the air and last I checked
still plays the same 1990s music
the heart in a blender song,
the world is a vampire least interesting most irritating smashing pumpkins song,
and so is basically the current less good classic rock station,
and now I’d agree with that old guy on the Denver Free Net
that Santana, especially back in the 60s and 70s,
were a much more musically interesting and innovative band
than Pearl Jam ever was
but in the 21st century
neither artist/group has been all that interesting to me

I’ve turned off the syndicating of this website
where I would try to have it automatically repost things
to micro.blog and bluesky and threads and supposedly the fediverse
but the automated posts rarely came through as I intended
and I’m not an active participant in any of those places anyway

but I’m going to start posting stuff here again
and if there is some weirdo lurk-following me via RSS
(I am a weirdo who lurk-follows people via RSS)
they may see these posts
and if someone visits this site
they may see these posts
but that’s about it
except probably some crawlers trawling for more training content

and at some point I may start syndicating again
or posting on some other networks
once I have some new things here
and once I have set up things how I like them again
and maybe have posted a backlog of things
that I didn’t post at the right time
because now that this isn’t feeding to anywhere else
I can add and edit and retcon
and no one that I know of
will be notified
except maybe you
and the other web crawlers
and the Santana fan from Denver
that I argued with in 1994
if he is even still alive
he seemed like a really old guy
but I was in eighth grade

now I’m a really old guy
on the internet
and Pearl Jam are really old guys
who play really boring music now
and not even hits, either
but I don’t have commenting set up here
so I guess
no one can argue with me

Standalone post link: Guess I should write and blog and stuff

Primordial goop of my childhood; trauma; euphoric flying; existentia. Posted a response/review on Letterboxd, repeated below.

I guess to stick with my supposed ‘own your own content’/POSSE philosophy I should have posted it here first, but I didn’t, because I’m not posting anything here lately and I like Letterboxd right now. Going to try to get things going here again, though. Starting with what I have instead of waiting for the perfect moment and getting all the things queued up.

Primordial goop of my childhood; trauma; euphoric flying; existentia. This was one of my earliest movie theater experiences. I would have been 5 years old, assuming it was the first run. I was traumatized, but also exhilarated by the flying scenes. My main memory of the film, besides the endless goop and guck, and of course the song, was that scene where he’s on the friendly/scary dog-dragon floating with the asteroids in existential space, and everything has disappeared. Terrifying.

That’s maybe what movies are supposed to be though: terrifying and exhilarating?

Watched this today on an old DVD at the in-law family cabin with my tweenage kids. A little underwhelming now but we could clearly see why I was terrified by it as a kid. I wish I could see this in a theater again now and somehow be overwhelmed by it again. Total darkness, huge screen, floor-shaking sound, flying over the mountains and then floating through the sad asteroid field, wondering if any hope is left. Would it feel the same? Will any movie ever feel like that again?

Also, need to watch Inception soon as a comparison, another movie I might want to make my kids watch with me.

Also, enjoyed this post I found through googling this: He Named Her “Moon Child” — Drew Mackie Has a Website

Also, Neverending Story kid reading all day and all night, compare to Parley P. Pratt in How Rare a Possession reading the Book of Mormon all day and all night
iykyk

Also, on my old Letterboxd account I had a challenge-ish list called ‘Borrowed Nostalgia for the Unremembered 80s’ to which this movie is central.

Been waiting 7 years for new music from Choker, and it’s not disappointing. Listened obsessively to his Filling Space trilogy of EPs back in 2019 and haven’t forgotten. Dijon last year, now Choker…

I have listened to his whole back catalog many times and again last week in preparation for this release, but didn’t log it here. So here are also some links to the Filling Space EPs if this new album isn’t enough for you:
